Are sweepstakes casinos legal? Been seeing a lot of confusion

I keep seeing people ask if these places are actually legal or if it’s some kind of loophole. Are sweepstakes casinos legal? Seems like each state has its own stance. I’ve been around long enough to remember when the whole social casino thing started, and it’s messy. Some states like Washington and Nevada shut them down, others let them run. My take: as long as you’re playing at one of the vetted sites on the reputable list, you’re probably fine, but don’t just assume every no-name casino is legit. What’s your understanding of the legal side?

Yeah it’s definitely confusing. I’m in Texas so I can’t play regular online casinos but sweepstakes casinos are fine here. From what I’ve read it’s all about the sweepstakes model - you buy GC for entertainment and get SC for free, so it’s not technically gambling in most states. But some states like WA, ID, and NV have banned them. The SpinTalk list usually has a note about which states are restricted if you want to check.
